Your Guide to Lipedema Reduction Surgery & Recovery
Lipedema Reduction Surgery can be life-changing! LRS can improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall quality of life. If you’re considering surgery, understanding the process and what to expect during recovery can help you feel more confident and prepared.
What is Lipedema Reduction Surgery?
Lipedema Reduction Surgery is the medically necessary removal of adipose tissue. LRS is significantly different from cosmetic liposuction. Each procedure may remove 5-10 liters, or more, of lipedema tissue. LRS often require multiple surgeries. Most women I work with require 4-6 surgeries, each about 3 months apart. Skin removal can be included in a liposuction procedure, or be a separate surgery. There are pros and cons of when skin is removed.
Because of the high volume, a surgeon with lipedema experience should be used. For a list of surgeons who are actively working with lipedema, please check the Resources page.
This surgery is not a cure for lipedema, but it is a highly effective treatment to improve quality of life and slow the progression of the condition when combined with proper post-operative care.
Why Consider Lipedema Reduction Surgery?
- Improved Mobility: Many patients experience significant ease of movement after surgery, making daily activities more manageable.
- Pain Reduction: By removing lipedema tissue, surgery can alleviate the chronic pain associated with the condition.
- Improved Quality of Life: Many patients report feeling more comfortable in their bodies, experiencing less fatigue, and regaining confidence.
- Reduced Swelling & Inflammation: Surgery, combined with proper post-operative care, helps control edema and prevent fibrotic tissue buildup.
What to Expect in Your Recovery Journey
Your recovery doesn’t end when you leave the operating room. Your recovery journey is just beginning. A structured plan helps ensure the best results while keeping pain and swelling under control.
Before Surgery: Preparing for Success

- Gather Essential Recovery Tools: Having the right compression garments, self-care tools, and hygiene supplies will make recovery easier.
- Learn Self-MLD Techniques: Proper lymphatic drainage techniques can help manage post-operative swelling.
